Assessing atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs.
Mission
To mobilize and transfer knowledge on atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions from reservoirs. We aim to tackle this critical environmental challenge by bridging the gap between research and industry. We provide scientifically robust and applicable solutions through a comprehensive, one-stop hub of services tailored to both public and private sector needs, including:
Consulting
consulting services for both public and private organizations for the development of measurement programs or GHG emission estimates.
Training
training about GHG emissions and for users of the G-res platform.
Mitigation
assessment of the potential mitigation measures to reduce GHG emissions from already existing installations or to define an optimal configuration to limit GHG emissions from future installations
Measurements & Analyses
coordination and/or execution of field measurement missions and laboratory sample analyses.
Tools
development of new analytical and modeling tools better suited to the specificities of certain types of installations for which existing methods are inadequate or unproven (e.g., PSH systems, cascade systems).
GHG Emissions from Reservoirs
The creation of reservoirs to provide services such as hydropower, flood control, irrigation, water supply requires flooding land upstream of dams, which leads to the rapid decomposition of organic matter contained in soils. This decomposition can lead to the release of important amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the first few years after flooding. Over time, these emissions decrease and gradually stabilize as the reservoir ages. The main GHGs produced and emitted are methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
